It's tough to know exactly which house plant you want certified or not, but it shouldn't cost you any more than $40,000 to get certified. The American Home Improvement Association recommends you apply for a home health and safety award for household landscaping.

But your state may have additional safety rules that are more comprehensive, but most businesses that want the kind of protection they're receiving should consider paying special attention to it.

That's because local governments have a significant power in this process, says Jessica E. Steehr, executive director of the Center for Economic Development in New York, which advises state leaders.

"The law is in the hands of a city, town, province or a college so their decision is very important," she says.

Under California's home health and safety plan, companies that choose to purchase or build the right plants must pay for those new equipment and certification fees. In California, however, the law is limited to the "right of return and coverage" requirement.

Steehr says that's a little worrisome,
