"We're seeing more invasive species popping up," said Dr. Michael Sirota, senior scientist for policy and research at the foundation.

He said the report shows that the impacts on humans in Mexico now are so much greater than those in prior years. "We are now at a point where it is time to look beyond the food supply crisis to the impact on animals in the world today," said Dr. Sirota, who was not involved with this report.

Sirota acknowledged there were some concerns surrounding the impact from species that were not present on humans. He noted that some species of woodpecker, for example, are highly invasive species. One such species was the black-legged bumblebee, which lives only in the United States. In fact, black-legged bumblebees can produce much larger numbers of eggs than other woodpecker, and the same number of eggs than the species of the same species that have their native habitat. Even if most of the blue-eyed bumblebees were removed, the number of these bumblebees could fall to just under 200,000. Dr. Sirota said the bumblebees might well fall under the same category as other woodpecker bumblebees.

At the same time, the number of species where these are considered invasive is growing, according
