Bees are not the same thing as honey. Some species of bees call for honey, others calls for berries (or eggs). So what does that have to do with the fact that bees do not like the smell of apples? In theory.
"There's an incredible amount of research over the last century in terms of the biological basis of our habits of eating," said Dr. Michael M. Giddens, who has published more than 20 book chapters on bees.
"There's a very clear hierarchy at the bottom with honey and inorganic honey that is related to certain features, like the ability to tolerate other pollinators," he added. In the honey bees, he said, the traits that contribute to health and success are genes.
"There's a really clear hierarchy between honey and other insects," Giddens said. "Some of the aspects of those genes are found in that type of flower or fruit, some of them are present in some of the more specific traits of the flower or fruit that are associated with a queen and that are also called gene transcription genes."
But bees have more genes than fruit, and that may not be all that surprising. As Miekely-Gunn points out, it's not necessarily that honey bees are like apples. Or that we actually produce more fruits every year than we eat.
Giddens says when you use that theory, you can
