house plants repel bugs and prevent disease. It's also designed to be used like a pesticide because the herbicide and insecticidal properties only work when applied in controlled quantities. The new product could reduce the spread of pest.

The scientists think the herbicide will not be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as a pesticide because of its known toxicity and long-lasting environmental problems and a need to reduce the amount of toxicity it might cause.

The technology, developed by researchers from Washington State University, has been tested by researchers in laboratories in four European developing nations. The findings will be applied to other crops, especially wheat.

Erik Giesecker, head of the Plant and Feed Technology Initiative at the National Plant Institute of Canada, called the new product the "greenest" weed killer out there, though he said it might be cheaper than the conventional weedkiller.

"Some of it is probably a little bit less toxic than glyphosate or other herbicides, making it better than some of the synthetic herbicides that we know of," Giesecker said.

He said the new crop is a bit more "advanced" than glyphosate- and non-GMO crops because more people in some areas aren't using them.

The weedkiller also works in an in vitro to try and disrupt normal bacteria in the body, Giesecker said.

The new plant is in the final stages of its production and will
