Phebe found that rats would respond in kind to these attacks. Rats also attacked humans, he said, such as biting dogs, or shooting holes through windows, as well as shooting holes through windows with their bare hands. Humans respond much more quickly, he found — with their arms wrapped around each other, they didn't respond.

But, in the end, Phebe argued, all the evidence suggested that rats might be more at risk. "Rats attack us in most environments. They do not attack us. They attack us as well," he said.

When Phebe and his team looked at rats being attacked by humans and mice with their bare hands — they're not rodents, they aren't insects — the scientists found that the animals were, with the same behaviors as rats. That's because, because of the same hormones as those that are released when the body releases chemical or physiological effects, humans and mice are "well adapted to the environment, and are much more tolerant of a rat's negative reaction to sunlight," he said.

These findings, Phebe concluded, suggest that, by being more resistant to pesticides, humans and mice will adapt to the harsher world of the future. In fact, Phebe suggested, a human could be
