The project was funded by the state and local governments. A third is planned for May.

Trent Riggs, professor of Forestry at California State University Riverside, said the project will cost about $1.3 million.

He and his colleagues have said they had no idea this would cost less than six quarts of water. However, Riggs said they estimate the price would be far less than the $1 million they'd pay for just four quarts.

He pointed to an issue in several other California tree kills; when plants are removed from dead trees and the trees are replaced, these are often times harvested with a more potent poison, the neurotoxin bromomam.

In California, the toxin is used to kill the most powerful species of tree. A large amount of bromomam is known to cause permanent neurological damage to nervous system cells.

The toxin also causes the body's immune system to be weakened, Riggs said, and a number of other problems.
