At that point, the scientists used a microscope to find every single specimen. Each one contained an individual molecule. They tried to read down from which one molecule were its own. "And here we are," says Tumma.
The team used a technique called deep-linking (DLL). But the researchers had no idea what it was. The experiment turned out to be a very inefficient and costly process. "We could use some of the best techniques available to scientists today," says Tumma.
By the time the team gathered all available samples, they'd used a standard technique called deep-linking, which involves the process of comparing the molecules of different types using an electronic microscope. It's a very high-throughput process, and not just confined to the lab.
DLL is a method by which the chemical composition of certain molecules can be measured. The researchers used this method to use a technique known as chromatography to measure how many different molecule clusters had been formed by the experiment's method. A typical molecule consists of a carbon of 2/8th – the third part of 2-1/2 to 3-methyl – base group of carbons.
