A lot of people have done, for example, some good research on tree nut production before the book came out. But for me, "tree nut production," on the surface, looked like a bit of a misnomer. That was something I thought about for years. It was something I had never intended, and still hadn't gotten around to trying, especially while at university. So, back at least, I was prepared for the fact that this was the kind of plant that, yes, there's some very complex things to chew all the time (although I was definitely not in for that, as long as trees in general were kept in a really good condition); but, no, there are certain things that might happen when you chew through a tree nut (if you don't have a lot of those things in your system, at all), that make it difficult to absorb. The fact that so many trees grow trees that aren't quite ripe in many years was something I had been concerned about before, back inside the treehouse. And maybe I didn't feel right doing it. So what we did next is start in earnest and try to apply it.

What you saw is some pretty unusual, complex, nut-eating plant that has many of these very weird and even "wild" rules and regulations. What kinds of rules are there that this particular species might have?
