The researchers reported their findings online September 25 in Journal of Applied Animal Sciences.
"In some populations of a growing genus of insects, they might become resistant to pesticides, but if you go with those specific bugs (which are most susceptible to pesticides), then it's difficult to make any meaningful changes to the pests," said James Daley, a graduate student in the Department of Integrative Animal Biology and lead author of the paper.
The new study's findings were the first such work of its kind in the field, to provide data on different types of insect pests—all of which are now being isolated from the common plant family Phidias. This new study could help inform the development of herbicides for these pests, using both current insecticides and new insect-resistant insecticides.
Daley said the work was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Biotechnology, Bethesda, Maryland. A full list of funding sources is available here.
