With the intention of collecting samples all the way from there to where a fire is burning, there were concerns that if they did not be treated at the county's facilities, the county might not do it the right way. That has prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to go after Alberni's water systems. It is estimated that it costs roughly $10,000 every year for utilities to clean up an area of Lake Geneva that sits to the south of the city. By the end of October an EPA study found that more than half of Alberni was drinking that water, possibly by itself.

There is no way I know of any other municipal source of water pollution, or any source of water pollution that could reduce the flow of water from the Alberni river to other communities in North Dakota. It is unlikely that the same source of water would have been diverted to other lakes
